Elder Carlie Towne was born and raised in Union Heights, a Gullah/Geechee neighborhood in the Neck Area between the City of Charleston, South Carolina, and North Charleston, South Carolina, to parents who also are from Union Heights.
Elder Carlie Towne is a producer, play-write, poet, historian, TV host and narrator. She was also the co-owner of Alternative, and co-owner of Swans La Expression - both are cultural stores. She wrote and produced an audio tape entitled, "My Journey to the Gullah/Geechee People" and, "It is a Cultural Affair." She also wrote and produced 30 plays for the Moja Arts Festival. She serves as committee member on Moja Arts Festival for 15 years. She has 2 sons and 3 grandson!!
She has worked full-time at AT&T for 39 years starting as an operator, and promoted to the position of sales Consultant .
She is the founder of Carlie Towne Production company, which produces TV shows, plays and commercials. The production company also provides funds for the Gullah Geechee Angel Network and Gullah/Geechee People Foundation, which are two not-for-profit organizations. The Gullah/Geechee People Foundation was co-founded by Elder Carlie Towne and her Husband Elder Halim Abdul-Karim.
Elder Carlie Towne is the Director of The Gullah/Geechee Angel Network and presently serves as Minister of Information of Gullah/Geechee Nation under the Leadership Of Queen Quet Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation.
Elder Carlie Towne Says:" I want a win win situation . When I get with people . I try to become them, so I can empathize with them . This helps me to relate to them and they become my family so no matter what, we stay focused on the issue at hand."
Our richness is in our Gullah Geechee Culture, our untapped resources and our youth. We must connect them to the Gullah/Geechee Nation so the Youth, Elders, Families and Friends can continue to connect to build our infrastructure for a win win situation.
Elder Carlie Towne wrote 30 plays for Moja Art Festival working with her community and working with many local actors. Elder Towne Travels to Africa, Caribbean, and Europe connecting with the diaspora serving humanity, Elder Carlie Towne is currently working with organizations and
orphanages in South Africa through Global Linkage a travel group that makes travel mission serving underserve communities.in Africa and connecting with the diaspora. As a co - host for AC Fun Time Superstar TV show, Elder Towne along with Arthur Chisolm is still connecting , documenting and inspiring everyone to live life to the fullest.. God is the head of Elder Towne life.Family, our ancestors and friends are her reasons for the laser focus on Gullah/Geechee Culture.
Elder Carlie Towne loves her Gullah/Geecheer Culture and prays that more people would understand the importance of knowing more about the Gullah/ Geechee culture.
Elder Carlie Towne is currently working on a program that is called Tech Up Step up. The program is an exchange of knowledge between elders , the youth and young adults. Elder Carlie Towne along with the GullahGeecheeangelnetwork board members work to teach Gullah/Geechee tradition such as doll making, quilting, storytelling , cooking and much more. The young adults teach the Elders how to us the computer , ipad, cell phone, tablet and much more. This program is being done at the Calvary AME Senior Citizen Center.
Elder Carlie Towne has lectured at the College of Charleston, traveled with Queen Quet Chieftess of Gullah/Geechee Nation with the Gullah/Geechee Think Tank speaking in Atlanta and Boston about climate change and its effect on Gullah/Geechee.
Elder Carlie Towne have presented on topic "Black Women in America Culture and History at the 97th Annual ASALH Meeting in
Pittsburg, PA . Over the years Elder Carlie Towne is a passionate Gullah/Geechee artist that has created a historical space
through poetry,plays ,workshop, and television to enrich, empower,edutain and inform humanity about our Gullah/Geechee culture, ancestor and tradition from Africa and the Caribbean,so we can connect people of all biological variation and to connect our youth and elders so that they can continue to rebuild our underserve community by way of art.
